Community Outreach

The Community Outreach Program at New Britain EMS encourages you to learn ways to become better prepared in an emergency. Take advantage of specialized instruction and hands-on training to save a life.

It's Our Duty to Serve the New Britain Community

Our commitment to quality of life in the communities we serve extends beyond the back of the ambulance. One of the primary functions of our Professional Standards and Training Division is ongoing community outreach. Our programs inform those we serve in a variety of ways. We’re very involved teaching injury prevention. And we also work to shine a light on the importance of an EMS agency focused on quality care.

In this time of soaring healthcare costs, record-high emergency department census, and strained resources, citizen education and prevention can address health issues before they escalate. Our proactive approach, geared toward prevention of illness and injury, empowers our citizens with tools to address chronic health needs before they become a medical emergency. Helping you recognize a medical emergency and teaching you how to potentially save a life is our primary objective. We encourage you to learn ways to help you become better prepared in an emergency.

Our Community Outreach Services

Car Seat Safety

Did you know that 4 of every 5 car seats are installed wrong?

Our Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will demonstrate and explain the proper selection, installation and use of car seats, booster seats, and the proper use of seatbelts. Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children age 1–13.  These deaths and injuries often can be prevented by the proper use of car seats, boosters, and seat belts.

According to Connecticut State Law, all children are required to ride in an approved child safety seat until they are 8 years old and 60 lbs.

A significant proportion of trauma-related deaths worldwide is due to bleeding or its consequences, establishing hemorrhage as the most common cause of preventable death in trauma.*STOP the Bleed®  is a national campaign to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained,  equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.

This easy-to-follow program teaches you to:

Understand the immediate response to bleeding

Recognize life-threatening bleeding

Apply appropriate ways to stop the bleeding

The help given by an immediate responder can often make the difference between life and death, even before professional rescuers arrive.

Citizens EMS Academy

Throughout the year New Britain EMS offers our Citizen’s EMS Academy. This four-class takes participants behind the scenes to learn firsthand the demands of running a high-performance, quality-focused EMS agency for the city of New Britain.

Our professional education team will teach participants what steps to take in the first moments of a critical incident. What to do until help arrives, how to perform lifesaving interventions such as CPR/AED, applying bleeding control, and treating overdoses are among the topics.

The course culminates with ride time experience and graduation. Tour our facilities, step into our vehicles and experience hands-on our state-of-the-art equipment. Most importantly— meet the dedicated men and women helping others, saving lives, and caring for our community.
